Istanbul Ataturk airport, first opened in 1912 for military purposes and is the first airport in Istanbul. In 1944, a International Civil Aviation agreement was signed in Chicago and the airport was decided to undergo renovation. In 1947, Westinghouse Electric International Company and The IG White Engineering Corporation signed a contract and the construction commenced in 1949 and was completed in 1953. The airport was openned to service on 1st of August 1953 and was called Yesilkoy Airport.

In the period which it was constructed, the runway, terminal, hangar and other facilities were built according to technological standards.

Master plan was laid out in 1971 within the International Terminal and began operation in 1983. The airport recived its present name "Yesilkoy Istanbul Ataturk Airport" in 1985. In the year 2000, international terminal had a maximum capacity of 20 million passengers a year. Due to the rapidly increasing number of passengers, a new expansion was needed. Today, the airport is capable of serving 38.2 million passengers a year.
