Transfers to and from Sabiha Gokcen Airport
Due to an increase in air traffic to Istanbul, it was decided a second airport was needed to keep up with the demands of both International and Domestic flights. Construction began on the Anatolian side of the Bicentennial city in 1998 and after a total cost of USD 550 million, was completed in January 2001. It was named in honor of the worlds first female combat pilot, Sabiha Gokcen. In terms of total passenger traffic, it is the second busiest airport in Istanbul and third in all of Turkey. Subsequent Terminal upgrades have increased capacity to 25 million passengers per year to accommodate the increase in demand of both International and Domestic flights. With convenient avenues of transportation, Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport has become the more favorable choice.
